Young women for life conducts protests in communities and at the magistrate courts, putting pressure on the justice system to improve its handling of the rape cases.
A powerful scene of unity and support unfolded outside the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Friday, as women from all walks of life gathered to stand in solidarity with Bonnette ahead of the appearance of her estranged husband Johan and his co-accused.
The women’s voices rose in unison as they sang “Asoze aphele amandla,” a stirring declaration that they would never give up their strength or hope.
As Johan arrived in a police van, the crowd’s anger boiled over, with shouts of “beast” and calls for him to remain behind bars. The atmosphere was tense, with police in riot gear setting up outside the court gates and a Nyala parked ominously nearby.
Yet the women remained undaunted, their posters proclaiming powerful messages: “Kotze and cronies must face the music,” “Real men don’t kill,” and “No bail for Kotze.”
Nuh Gumede, spokeswoman for the young women for life, praised Bonnette’s incredible courage throughout the ordeal and pledged the unwavering support of all South African women.
The charges against Kotze were a litany of horror, including the alleged gang-rape and mutilation of Bonnette at gunpoint and the murder of her 19-year-old son Conrad.
As the court proceedings began, the women outside stood united, a powerful reminder that even in the face of unspeakable violence and cruelty, solidarity and hope could not be extinguished.
